JOINED OXFORD COMMUNITY SCHOOLS
August 2004

Welcome to Daniel Axford and Oxford Elementary Schools! I am grateful to be part of Oxford Community Schools and to serve as the International Baccalaureate (IB) Coordinator for both DA and OES. I studied at Western Michigan University to earn my BA in Elementary Education with minors in Math, Science, Early Education, and Integrated Creative Arts. At WMU, I drove 32 hours in a campus van with 11 other student volunteers to the Navajo reservation in Shiprock, New Mexico. There we connected and served the community at the local Boys and Girls Club. This experience grew my passion to connect and take action with the world around us!

Subsequently, I began my teaching career here in Oxford at Lakeville Elementary and earned my Masters in Educational Leadership at Oakland University.

As an IB Coordinator, I support the implementation of the IB's high quality and rigorous academic program. Working collaboratively with staff, we ensure:

Students are receiving best practice instruction and curriculum.

Students are encouraged to take action with their learning to make our world a better place (this is clearly evident through our 5th Grade Exhibition process).

Students have agency (voice, choice, & ownership) in their learning.

Students learn how to approach their learning by intentionally practicing their communication, research, self-management, social, and thinking skills.

Students "learn how to learn" by engaging in the inquiry cycle of learning as well as using conceptual questions to think deeply about a topic.

All staff members approach each student with the whole child in mind (The Learner Profile is the IB lens we use with one another).

In a nutshell, "The IB aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect."

On a personal note, I married my college sweetheart, Ben. We have 3 beautiful children, Luke, Elle, and Drew, who keep us inspired and on our toes! We are a family on mission together to create a better and more peaceful world.
